Wine Focus: Margaret River Wines PDF Print E-mail
France's Bordeaux region is famous for some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon in the world, but boutique wines from the Margaret River region of Australia are drawing the attention of even the most dedicated Cabernet drinkers. France's Bordeaux region is famous for some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon in the world, but boutique wines from the Margaret River region of Australia are drawing the attention of even the most dedicated Cabernet drinkers. Just four hours south from Perth, along the coast, this area has wonderful vineyards, pristine beaches and a beautiful coastline. It's often passed over by travelers on a visit to Australia, but this is a mistake.

There are all kinds of rewards to visiting this region on your trip to Western Australia, from trips through the countryside, beach and water activities, and sightseeing to fabulous food and wonderful wine. After all, almost a quarter of Australia's finest wine exports are from the Margaret River, one of the country's best regions for producing wine grapes.

Part of the reason that so many great wines have been grown here is the Margaret River's climate. Warm and reminiscent of the Mediterranean, this is one of the best places for wine grapes to grow. Travelers will also enjoy the warm waters, wide and beautiful beaches, and incredibly good surfing conditions.

Concerts on the Leeuwin estate have been operating since 1985, and range from classical performances to country and blues. Boutique lodges nestled in the forest offer tranquil, pleasant places to stay, or you can try more mainstream lodging. There are options for every taste and nearly every budget, after all.

There are all kinds of options for lodging, as well, from majestic lodges and luxury cabins buried deep in the forest to comfortable bed and breakfasts and excellent hotels. It doesn't matter whether you prefer to stay in a good hotel room that's close to everything you'd like to see, or you want to enjoy private time on your own balcony with a glass of local Chardonnay - there's something for you.

Cellar door wine tastings and vineyard tours will let you find out a lot more about this region's excellent wines. Be sure you take the time to investigate local vineyards, so you'll understand what the world's wine lovers are talking about. You'll find great Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon in this region.

If you love wine, you won't be disappointed in wines from the Margaret River area. While Cabernet Sauvignon can be overly tannic or dry, you'll find that most examples are deep and soft, without any unpleasant overtones. The Cabernets are equally good. You'll want to try them all, and maybe even take a few bottles home with you!

If you've never visited the Margaret River wine region or tasted any of their fine varieties, you're missing out. This area has a lot of offer, including some of the best wines in Australia, grown in a fabulous Mediterranean climate. The Margaret River shouldn't be overlooked when you plan your next vacation.
