Most of us realize that sleep is not only important in revitalizing us mentally, but is essential for our body to rejuvenate itself as well. Therefore, a recent survey (Sleep In America) from the 'National Sleep Foundation', a non-profit organization of researchers, patients and facilities, might leave you amazed. The yearly poll calculates Americans are getting, on average, just 6.7 hours of sleep a night on a weekday. Also, over the course of the last 10 years, an increasing number of Americans are getting under 6 hours sleep per night. Those who get 8 (or more) hours per night is decreasing too. Living in this non-stop, 24/7, around the clock world, it's hardly surprising that we're sleeping about an hour and a half less per night than our ancestors did little more than a hundred years ago. Laid before us are many distractions and forms of entertainment that previous generations didn't have. So, it's clear why sleep has gotten pushed aside. The ready accessibility of technology like the internet, cell phones and other gadgets make it possible to be connected to the world at all hours, and to do things at any time, anywhere. In another survey, it was reported by the American Psychological Association that just over half of 7,000 respondents lost sleep at night due to stress. Of course failing to get enough sleep leaves most of us feeling irritable and drained, as well as burdening us with impaired work performance, lackluster thought processes and questionable decision making. Most people can improve their sleep quality though, by getting into a a regular sleeping routine. Go to bed and awake in the morning at a similar time every day, even on the weekend, holidays and vacations. It's important to ensure that the place where you sleep is restful, peacful and at a comfortable temperature. Do these things and you've a higher likelihood of getting the 8 hours of sleep that you need.
